Abstract:

Pathways to prison and to reentry for women in the correctional system are different in many ways from those for men. Examining the pathways that bring women to prison gives understanding to key needs in treatment upon reentry. Recent research at the Alvis residential program points to the need for intensive substance abuse, trauma, and sexual health programming. Key relationships in women’s lives and a clinical culture of care provide needed pathways for hope and healing. Line staff provide a key role in helping women in transition.
