Abstract:

In 38 years as a prison governor followed by 12 years advocating for reforms, Tim Newell has seen the field of restorative justice develop, grow, overcome obstacles to acceptance, correct errors in theory and application, and assume an important role in the criminal justice system. In this thoughtful retrospective, Newell reviews the key theoretical and practical aspects of restorative work that set it apart from mainstream correctional practice, and describes, in particular detail, the work of a community chaplaincy project that reflects the values and potential of restorative work.
