Abstract:

What follows is a story and a personal viewpoint from the front lines of the donor intent struggle. Here is some background: In 1961, Charles (Princeton ’26) and Marie D. Robertson donated $35 million worth of stock to establish a foundation whose sole purpose was to establish, maintain, and support a graduate school at Princeton University to prepare students for careers in government service, especially in international affairs. After passage of the Tax Reform Act of 1969, the Robertson Foundation was categorized as a supporting organization with a seven-person Board of Trustees, four University-Designated Trustees and three Family-Designated Trustees.
