Abstract:

Sudden Death Changes Foundation's Course The saga of a Tennessee foundation poses a somber reminder of the importance of anticipating in detail the potential problems that may arise after the founder of a family foundation is gone. Dan Maddox, a self-made Tennessee industrialist, created a family foundation in 1968, partly because he was reluctant to leave his fortune to his three children. His concept was that his wife, who was much younger, would manage the foundation and that it would help provide opportunities for young Tennesseans. Those plans were thwarted when he and his wife died together in an accident in 1998.
