Abstract:
Only 50% of foster care youth graduate from high school. Of those who do graduate from high school, only 20% pursue post-secondary education. The obstacles these kids face are daunting. This article examines the methods and results achieved by TIP—Transition to Independence Process. The TIP model is an evidence-supported practice that takes into account the often harsh realities of transition age youth with serious emotional challenges, and here the authors describe its most important features and provide examples of successful implementations. Identifies the unique needs of transition age youth with behavioral health challenges and presents an overview of TIP to familiarize readers with the model’s philosophy, values, and principles.Keywords: Transition age youth, Transition to Independence Process (TIP) model, behavioral health challenges, Stars Training Academy
