Abstract:

Student safety, campus crime, and gangs, as well as various forms of victimization, are obvious topics of major concern for school administrators. Dealing with fighting and aggressive behaviors at school is also an ongoing challenge confronting many educators in today’s schools. In addition, school principals and educators are involved in facilitating, planning, and implementing educational programs for students on a daily basis. Although some school principals struggle with the behavioral implications of students involved in violence, many also recognize the importance of communication, language, and learning as they plan successful safety programs in schools. This article focuses on the findings from one qualitative study question: “What are your primary concerns about providing services for children and adolescents who are involved in violence?”—with violence” defined as behaviors and actions that include threats or intentional harm to individuals or property.
