Abstract: 

The deployment of law enforcement officers as first responders to mental health crises can lead to violence, arrest, further destabilization, and even death. The number of fatal shootings by police of the mentally ill or disabled is on the rise placing police behavior under intense scrutiny. An excerpted summary of findings describes the current state of practice and a call for revised policies, training, supervision, and timely internal review going forward.
