Abstract:

Strengths-based themes have been a staple of progressive criminal justice reforms some time. Unfortunately, after a recent rejuvenation in the 1960s and 1970s under the guise of the “New Careers Movement,” this theme largely disappeared from correctional practice and rhetoric. The authors argue, however, that there the strengths narrative seems to be coming back in multiple guises in the social services and, accordingly, this theme may be an appropriate one to introduce into the current reentry debate.
