Abstract:

While correctional research often focuses on identifying the correlates of offender failure (i.e., the predictors of offender recidivism), substantially less research has attempted to reveal the correlates of success. This article uses information gathered from focus groups with offenders who have been released from prison and have remained in the community for a year or more with no new offenses or violations. The resulting transcripts were used to determine the most substantial difficulties faced by reentering offenders and how these difficulties are compensated for.
