Abstract:

Research on problem and pathological gambling suggests that there may be important gender differences with respect to gambling. Also, with the continued increase in women’s rights and status within Western society, the female is taking on ever-changing roles and responsibilities. Thus, we cannot assume that jail/prison gambling among incarcerated females is necessarily the same as it might be for males. The purpose of this study is to begin to explore the nature and implications of female inmate gambling and how such gambling in jails and prisons may be experienced.
