Abstract:
In the last twenty years, the field of substance abuse treatment has experienced enormous upheaval and change. Many of the basic concepts of treating chemical dependency have been called into question, and substantial challenges have been offered both concerning how addiction is conceptualized, as well as how it is treated. Two of the most influential changes in recent years have concerned the issues of how motivation for change is conceived, and how the concept of treatment matching applies to the issue of motivation. This article addresses the issues involved in moving coerced clients from external motivation for treatment, to internal motivation for change via the use of a cognitive tool known as the Addiction/Offender Cycle.Keywords: Prochaska; DiClemente; Norcross;
