Abstract:

Although survivors of multiple victimizations who also have multiple needs (MV/N) may have many of the same problems as survivors of a single victimization (such as a sexual assault) have, many face more complicated problems and challenges to overcome. These challenges can include, but certainly are not limited to, sexual assault, child abuse, and substance abuse. This article is adapted from a guide entitled Helping Sexual Assault Survivors With Multiple Victimizations and Needs: A Guide for Agencies Serving Sexual Assault Survivors (2007) by Jill Davies. This is the first of a two-part article and will cover the background information leading to this research. The special needs of MV/N individuals will be identified, in addition to the roles of the advocate, staff, and supervisors in addressing the unique needs of this population. Treatment modalities and the need for supervisory involvement will also be covered. The interrelationship and interdependence between the individual Rape Crisis Centers (RCCs) and the communities they serve will be explored.
