Abstract:
In the early 1970s, several criminological articles, and a few program initiatives, highlighted the fact that women prisoners were routinely ignored in the correctional literature, as well as in correctional practice. In subsequent decades, as the American prison population soared, so did the population of women in prison. One of the major organizations raising concerns about women prisoners was the National Institute of Corrections (NIC), which, almost immediately after its opening in the mid-1970s, started paying attention to women prisoners. NIC’s attention to this topic has never waned. This article highlights NIC’s current recommendations for effective programming for female inmates. Keywords: effective programming; female reentry
