Abstract:
In response to the high post-release recidivism rates and the overwhelming needs of individuals returning from incarceration over the past several decades, many reentry programs designed to facilitate the transition from incarceration to the community have been implemented. Reentry courts, which combine intensive judicial oversight with rehabilitative services, arose as part of a broader national movement toward the development and implementation of specialized “problem-solving courts,” such as drug, mental health, domestic violence, and community courts, as an approach for addressing specific problems among criminal justice populations. This piece analyzes the characteristics of reentry courts and provides preliminary insight into the potential social and economic benefits of having such institutions in place. Keywords: reentry court
