Abstract:
Russ Buettner’s article, “Reaping Millions in Nonprofit Care for Disabled,” New York Times (NYT) p. 1 (Aug. 2, 2011), focuses on the Young Adult Institute Network’s provision of care for the developmentally disabled in New York City. While the article is clearly an expose’, it is not the garden variety expose’ of horrid conditions, no treatment or services, client abuse, and the like. Rather, it exposes the nonprofit organization itself and the brothers Philip and Joel Levy from Brooklyn, earning $1,000,000 a year each as executives, using luxury cars paid for with public money and Philip charging the organization some $50,000 for one year when his daughter attended NYU. Not only is there nothing reported about poor care, there are plaudits for the Levy’s pioneering clinical care for a population shunned by dentists and doctors and hiring and retaining caring persons. Keywords: Young Adult Institute Network
