Abstract:

On March 6, 2012, a 78-page Complaint was filed in the Federal District Court for Arizona. A group of experienced and well regarded civil right lawyers, including Don Specter and David Fahti, represent the plaintiff class. The Complaint seeks to establish four subclasses: the mentally ill, inmates requiring medical and dental care, and those in segregated confinement. Don Specter, the California attorney who prevailed in Brown v. Plata and dozens upon dozens of similar cases, describes prison conditions in Arizona as among the worst he has ever seen. David Fahti, director of the ACLU National Prison Project and a low-key, brilliant attorney, spoke out about how Arizona’s use of solitary confinement causes prisoners to suffer, even die.
