Abstract:
The Institute for Traffic Safety Management and Research has been monitoring and researching the effects of laws that expand the use of ignition interlock devices for many years. This article summarizes the background information related to the laws and the devices themselves, outlining the outcomes of a survey that was conducted from April to June 2011—the first year that the ignition interlock expansion law was in effect. In interpreting these findings, it is important to recognize that the information and comments are based on less than one year’s experience with the monitoring process. In the future, it may be beneficial to use focus groups to collect further information from the monitors during the coming year after they have had more experience with the monitoring process. Keywords: Leandra’s Law, Institute of Traffic Safety Management and Research of Rockefeller College, State University of New York, installation, vendors, problem events, monitor recommendations
