Abstract:

Inmates may refuse to eat as part of a hunger strike, as a calculated aspect of a life-ending decision, or as a symptom of a serious mental illness. When to force-feed a noneating inmate can be a diffi cult question of law and ethics. In the case of James Kenneth Embry, we appear to have an inmate who spun out of control in 2013 when he stopped his anti-anxiety medications.
