Abstract:

As a general principle, inmates with a serious medical condition are not entitled to treatment they might prefer if treatments made available are adequate; not the best, but reasonably designed to accomplish the needed result. With a diabetic, insulin is the treatment. With an inmate suffering with GID, is surgical “repair” the only treatment? A preferred treatment? Preferred only in this case? Required only in this case? Michelle Kosilek’s personal and legal journey to replicatethe body and soul of woman having been born physically as male has gone on for years.
