Abstract:

In August 2011, Volunteers of America (VOA) honored Dr. Frank J. Porporino with its prestigious Booth Correctional Award. Dr. Porporino is a well-known researcher and program developer who served for many years with Correctional Services of Canada. In this thought-provoking article, edited from his acceptance speech, Dr. Porporino reflects on ways in which corrections can more fully serve a human-service role, engage offenders in meaningful change, and most significantly, “relax” the field’s formulaic drive for efficiency, stop trying to forcefully correct offenders and, instead, focus on creating environments and affording offenders the range of experiences in which “self-correcting” can become more likely.
