Abstract:

Meaningful collaboration and dialogue serve to enhance mutual understanding between the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) and its partners in terms of their respective roles and contributions to public safety. This understanding enhances the quality of the services delivered to offenders and affects all Canadians. The development of the Federal Community Corrections Strategy: Vision to 2020 ( http://www.csc-scc.gc.ca/text/faits/03-12-eng.shtml ) represents a concrete example of what can be achieved when criminal justice partners work together toward a common goal. This article details the CSC’s approach to the creation of its community corrections strategy and demonstrates how this type of collaboration allows the CSC to both hear and be heard. Canadians can have a voice that reflects the integration of many diverse points of view, all contributing to a strengthened network of supports for offenders that will ultimately enhance public safety.
