Abstract:

The family court system grew rapidly within the United States, providing children and youth alternatives to adult prison until the end of the 20th century. At that time, public opinion turned against treating children and youth differently from adults when they committed heinous crimes such as murder, rape, arson, or aggravated assault. Now, children as young as 11 are placed in adult prison systems, often mixed in with the general population without regard to age or physical development.
