Abstract:

This is the first part of a two-part article. The conclusion will appear in the next issue of the Journal of Community Corrections. Mixed Reviews of Treatment Programs Recent reviews and meta-analyses of the effectiveness of family violence treatment programs have not been encouraging. Researchers have found very weak treatment effects (Levesque, 1998) or no treatment effects (Babcock et al., in press). Participants described as having the worst outcomes are those with histories of criminality and substance abuse or those with personality disorders, precisely the clientele encountered in the correctional field.
