Abstract:
Thirty years ago (or more), there was considerable discussion about the pains of imprisonment, fuelled by studies of the deprivations prisoners endured while incarcerated. This led to many innovative programs that sought to improve the prison conditions that were thought to hamper a prisoner’s return to normal community living. The wisdom of the past has been lost, and we arebusy reinventing what a previous generation of correctional professionals knew—namely, unsupervised and unsupported released prisoners are likely to recidivate. Keywords:
