Abstract: 

The sheer volume of people with mental illness under correctional supervision necessitates that correctional practitioners have a fundamental knowledge about the risks and needs of this population and how best to work to improve their clinical and criminal outcomes. This article provides a plain-language summary of the research on justice-involved individuals that has been conducted over the past two decades. It specifically focuses on two primary topics: (1) how mental illness affects criminality and justice system outcomes, and (2) how practitioners should address the needs of people with mental illness who are under correctional supervision.
