Abstract:

Nearly ten years ago, following a seminar on offender supervision held in Proto, Italy, common concerns regarding offender behavior led to the development of an international network for the Collaboration of Researchers for the Effective Development of Offender Supervision ( CREDOS). The coordination of the network was shared among Fergus McNeill (University of Glasgow, Scotland), Chris Trotter (Monash University), and Peter Raynor (Swansea University, United Kingdom). Today, the CREDOS network is composed of researchers and policy and practice partners who share a common interest in the development of effective offender supervision. CREDOS met in an unusual U.S. session preceding the annual meeting of the American Society of Criminology in San Francisco. The meeting was organized by Faye Taxman and was structured around four main themes, as described in this article: the quality of supervision, probation in other countries, advancing practice through performance measures and value-based probation, and a section on special topics.
