Abstract:

Family philanthropy’s opportunities are considerable. The effective investment of not only time and dollars, but of creativity, boldness, passion, compassion, patience, and perseverance ensures progress toward the fulfillment of mission and the potential for significant positive impact on the causes and communities served. But it is just in making that investment and anticipating those rewards that philanthropic families find the implicit challenges. Many of these challenges are shared by other types of foundations and grantmaking organizations. They include the work and difficulties associated with good governance and grantmaking as well as prudent management and investing.
