Abstract:

The latest annual survey from the DOD in 2019 found that there were 6,236 reports of sexual assault by service members as victims or the subjects of criminal investigations. One of the prevention mechanisms that has been shown to stop assaults is intervention by a colleague. To leverage this, the military began using virtual reality training modules with strong outcomes. During the virtual reality program, participants are actively engaged in simulated scenarios in which a colleague is in crisis. This article surveys the current state of sexual assault crimes and enforcement in the military and strategies the armed forces are pursuing to reduce the incidence of rape and harassment, including virtual reality training scenarios involving scenes of sexual harassment, which are set to roll out in July 2021.
