Abstract:

Young people are increasingly being subject to sextortion—threats to expose another’s sexually explicit or compromising images. Given the ubiquity of social media and the harm social media exposure can cause to an individual would suggest that research in this area is overdue. This article examines the results of anonymous online survey of 1,631 sextortion victims, the repercussions of sextortions, and the lack of criminal laws to address the situation.

Keywords: social media; privacy; Photoshop; body-shaming; blackmail in exchange for money; dating violence and stalking; child pornography
