Abstract:
A U visa was designed to protect undocumented victims in the U.S. who may fear deportation if they come forward to report rape, sexual assault, or other type of violent crime. U visas also include protections from domestic violence, torture, trafficking, slave trade, kidnapping, female genital cutting, and murder. Unlike other forms of protection for immigrant women, the U visa does not require that the victim be legally married to the perpetrator. This article describes the information that is necessary to include in the U visa application and where to submit it, as well as a critique of some of the limitations of the U visa. Keywords:
