Abstract:

This article summarizes the main factors contributing to the sexual exploitation of young women for commercial purposes. Authors Lisa Pasko and Meda Chesney-Lind present two case histories, that of Charity and Bella, to demonstrate the developmental and psychosocial forces that contribute to the sexual degradation of young women. In doing so, they make a compelling argument for the crucial role played by the mothers of these young women in either facilitating or preventing their daughters from being placed in sexually exploitative positions.
