Abstract:

Can entities such as a government, a hospital, or a battered women’s shelter be held liable if a woman is killed by her abusive partner? This article describes three recent decisions where this issue was specifically considered. The cases include a judgment against the Turkish government, a mental hospital that discharged a psychotic patient who murdered his wife, and a battered women’s shelter for failure to install adequate security devices.
