Abstract:

In recent years our field has experienced a move to establish mental health treatment guidelines that are based on empirical evidence. There has been an outpouring of literature on evidence-based treatments, practice parameters, best practices, and treatment algorithms. The movement toward presenting efficacious treatments has been stimulated by pressures from diverse sources for increased accountability: Managed care, for all its limitations, has made reimbursement more dependent on the use of clearly delineated treatments that have demonstrated efficacy; institutions have also embraced efficacious treatments as a means of promoting system accountability in their settings. In brief, a range of internal and external pressures have pushed the mental health fields to demonstrate the value of psychotherapy.
