Abstract:

Recommendations from the Surgeon General’s Conference on Children’s Mental Health position the prevention of mental health problems and treatment of mental illnesses in youth as a national health priority (U.S. Public Health Service, 2000). Federal departments most responsible for this population (Health & Human Services, Education, and Justice), philanthropic foundations, advocacy groups, and researchers have collaborated in unprecedented ways to examine the fruits of efforts expended over the last decade to improve mental health services for children. The examination has yielded a very mixed picture indeed. To summarize, there is good news and bad news.
