Abstract:

This article reviews the literature on the diagnosis of conduct disorder (CD), addressing the need to refine the nosology to better differentiate youth who present along a continuum of behavioral and affective disturbance. A more effective delineation of this disorder is essential if we are to offer more successful interventions for youth with substance use/abuse problems, because CD is the most commonly obtained diagnosis among those who enter treatment or who are involved in the juvenile justice system. The treatment of CD is particularly difficult, as noted by clinicians and researchers, so that a further careful elaboration of its characteristics may facilitate the development of more targeted intervention strategies.
