Abstract: 

This article describes selected aspects of one of the Child System and Treatment Enhancement Projects (Child STEPs) carried out as part of the Research Network on Youth Mental Health. A main goal of the Research Network is to find ways to bring the science and practice of child mental health care closer together. The clinical trial described here—the Clinic Treatment Project—attempts to bring empirically supported psychotherapies for child anxiety, child depression, and child conduct problems into clinical practice in community mental health clinics in Boston and Honolulu. We do this by providing training and case consultation to the participating clinicians, and we will ultimately compare the outcomes of children who have been randomly assigned to these clinicians to the outcomes of children randomly assigned to clinicians employing treatment as usual in the same clinics. The article focuses in particular on issues related to engaging community clinics.
