Abstract:

Classroom teachers and school-based mental health providers assume significant roles in the lives of students enrolled in pre-kindergarten through 12th grade; thus, both groups of professionals are positioned to make dramatic contributions toward fostering children’s inextricably linked academic achievement and healthy psychological development. Achieving the potential benefits of such collaborative activity, however, is a goal yet to be realized in most schools. This paper provides perspectives, practices, and resources that school mental health professionals can use to foster collegial relationships with teachers as well as to implement evidence-based programs that will enhance students’ psychosocial well-being and academic success.
