Abstract:

This article seeks to further the understanding of partner abuse in diverse intimate relationships, both heterosexual and non-heterosexual, by examining the abuse of socially and culturally granted privilege. It maintains that such privileges have been under-recognized when conceptualizing how power is abused in intimate relationships, and explores the primary power paradigm in the field related to gender and male privilege, alongside a broader paradigm related to power and control. It provides case examples to demonstrate how socially granted privileges can be used to maintain power over a partner. Case studies are offered.

Keywords: socially granted privilege can be used as a weapon of power in intimate relationships
