Abstract:

The first National Elder Abuse Incidence Survey (September 1998) found that 90% of perpetrators are related to the victim, that male perpetrators outnumber female ones three to two, and that two-thirds of perpetrators are either the victims’ adult children or spouses. They also found that 21% of cases were reported to and substantiated by adult protective service agencies and that those age 80 and older are abused and neglected at two to three times their proportion in the elderly population.
