Abstract: 

This is the initial column in what will be an ongoing series on “Clinical Practice” by this author. It will focus on issues confronting professionals working to assist elderly or disabled victims of abuse, neglect, and exploitation. It will be geared to those involved in prevention, case investigation and intervention, and treatment of victims and offenders. The column will address clinical practice in a broad sense, discussing the work of adult protective services (APS), other social services, victim advocates, domestic violence and sexual assault counselors, mental health clinicians, and staff providing services both within facilities and in the community. Clinical practice might be described as the application of social science knowledge to work intended to assist individuals, families, and systems. This initial article raises questions of ethics confronted by clinical practitioners.
