Abstract:
Imagine being not only elderly or disabled, but also homeless and on the streets. In San Francisco, landlords using California’s Ellis Act are able to evict renters and take advantage of the huge influx of home seekers in the Bay Area. The double trauma of eviction and homelessness has hit harder on the elderly, the disabled, and low-income renters. Reports of elderly persons who are now living on the streets or who have died since being evicted are bringing additional attention to this issue. Keywords: San Francisco Rent Board; Residential Rent Stabilization and Arbitration Board; eviction; waiting lists for public senior housing; criminal charges of elder abuse against landlords; Anti-Eviction Mapping Project; Nash v.
