Abstract:

A very exciting and successful project has been underway for the past three years that is expanding the capacity of local organizations to address elder abuse in their communities. With funding from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Administration on Aging (AoA), the National Committee for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (NCPEA) has developed 32 new local elder abuse prevention coalitions across the country where none previously existed. Communities benefiting from the network development project include rural, urban, and suburban areas, tribal nations, and ethnic minority populations from Florida to Washington and from Vermont to Arizona and California. These coalitions bring together committed individuals from a broad base of community organizations and agencies to address elder abuse issues within the context of their local populations. Sharing expertise, resources, and creativity among the members, these new coalitions have implemented an impressive array of activities and projects in their communities, and have ambitious goals for the future.
