Abstract:
Despite the number of “successful” elderly, many are in decline, frequently suffering from depression, an often-missed diagnosis complicated by issues of abuse (including fraud) and neglect. Recently, new models have been introduced designed specifically to help screen older adults for depression. “Educating About and Screening Elders for Depression” (EASE-D) is one of the most promising of these new models. This article examines how the EASE-D works, and how service programs can adapt the model to identify clinical depression in their older adult clientele. Keywords: Depression; diagnosis; treatment; suicide; dementia; medication; EASE-D
