Abstract: 

Solitary confinement has been identified as among the most harmful forms of punishment prisoners can endure. This article continues the discussion of this important topic, which affects the elderly and disabled alike. Building on the articles in previous issues of VED that explored the unfolding scandals at Rikers Island, the article below discusses the effects of isolation on the mentally ill as an abuse that exacerbates a condition that should be addressed with medication and other therapeutic responses.
