Abstract:
The incidence of elder sexual abuse in general and resident-to-resident abuse in particular is unknown. However, Teaster et al. (2000) found that assaults perpetrated by residents constituted 75% of the elder sexual abuse cases substantiated by Virginia Adult Protective Services over a three-year period. Five types of elder sexual abuse are described in the literature. This article presents information which has emerged from the author’s experience consulting with staff of Elder and Adult Protective Services, ombudsmen programs, and care facilities regarding cases of resident perpetrated sexual assault. Keywords: resident-to-resident sexual abuse
