Abstract:
Although many elder abuse advocates talk about the difficulty of finding placements for elder abuse victims who need to be relocated from their homes, actual use of elder shelters is not high. When elder abuse pioneer Dr. Rosalie Wolf scoured the globe in 1999, she located 20 shelters in the U.S., Canada, and Japan. Fifteen years later, VED was only able to confirm the existence of 15 active U.S. shelters. Here the author outlines shelter structural models, demographics, security, services and funding as well as providing listings of Elder Shelters by state. Keywords: Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Center for Elder Abuse Prevention; consortiums of agencies; visitation restrictions; government benefits; private pay; scholarship fund; The SPRiNG Alliance; National Clearinghouse on Abuse in Later Life
