Abstract:

The crime of burglary often involves illegal entry into homes in residential neighborhoods. These “home invasions,” as they are increasingly being called in post-9/11 America, frequently stir up local fears—and sanctioning practices— because they seem to attack the sanctity of home owners’ (and renters’) private space. Burglaries confront people’s personal sense of safety, because of the location of these crimes. The author takes a look at the American conception of burglary in this piece and proposes an alternative framework for viewing the phenomenon.
