Abstract:

As people with HIV/ AIDS increasingly live longer, the cost of care and treatment is placing greater demands on families and friends, as well as on local governments and community based organizations. Despite this fact, funding in New York City has been shifting from community-based organizations to a medical model. Unfortunately, these solutions are cutting resources where the need is greatest. Community-based organizations in New York have served the highest concentration of HIV and AIDS clients in the country, yet funding support is now being redirected elsewhere. This article elaborates on the problems associated with this reallocation of funds.
