Offender Programs Report

Abstract:

This article reviews research that will help correctional educators meet the following objective: to encourage women offenders to meet (and exceed) the Canadian educational requirement that federally sentenced female offenders complete a 10th grade education level. Women who have not completed grade 10 are 2.5 times more likely to be returned to federal custody compared to women who had completed grade 10. In contrast, education level was not related to federal readmission among a comparison group of federally sentenced male offenders. Not surprisingly, given these findings, Correctional Service of Canada’s (CSC) program strategy for women offenders includes an educational requirement intended to reduce recidivism.
