Abstract: 

This article examines two contrasting approaches to the use of canine units in prisons: one, the use of attack dogs to assist correctional officers in potentially violent encounters, such as cell extractions; and the use of canines in therapeutic regimes, such as the prison dog training programs pioneered by Sister Pauline Quinn and now in place in nearly 300 prisons around the U.S.
